Let’s bring some vibrant floral magic to your art journal! In this tutorial, we’ll explore a fun and easy “wet on wet” watercolor technique to create beautiful flowers. Using just a handful of supplies, you’ll learn how to layer colors, add depth with details and shading, and finish with a splash of creativity. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this project is a perfect way to get creative and make your art journal bloom.
Prep your art piece by taping off the edges of your page with painter’s tape, running your finger along the inner edge to make sure it is sealed tight. Mist down your watercolor palette with water.
We are going to work “wet on wet” with this art journal page, so add water to your entire page using your paintbrush. Add three blobs to your page using yellow watercolor paint, then add petal shapes using magenta, purple, and deep pink. Add dark green to the background. The water will blend and allow the color to spread. Dry with a heat tool.
Use a permanent pen or marker to sketch out and doodle your flower petals and flower centers. Fill in where you would like your leaves in the background too. Next, take a Stabilo Aquarellable pencil to add more shading and dimension to the petals and centers.
Take a paintbrush and darker green watercolor paint to fill in the negative space in your background. This helps your leaves really pop! Dry with a heat tool.
Use a liner brush with black acrylic paint to darken and add more detail lines to your flowers. I’ll also use a liner brush with white acrylic paint and add some texture lines to the petals.
Finally, I’ll take a wet fan brush with black acrylic paint and tap it above my page to create a splatter effect on the flower centers.
