Join us for a fun art journaling session as we bring a vibrant flower to life using watercolors, Sharpie accents, and playful splatter techniques – with a surprise heart shape that naturally appeared in the flower center, adding an extra touch of whimsy! This project is perfect for experimenting with texture and color, whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your creative skills.

flower heart art journal page

Prepare your art journal by taping off the edges with painter’s tape, then mist your watercolor palette with a bit of water to activate the colors. Start by painting a yellow center for your flower, followed by vibrant orange petals radiating outward. For the background, brush in shades of green, then add a touch of dark red around the flower’s center for depth.

Dip a fan brush in rubbing alcohol and gently tap it above your page to create a unique water droplet effect. Finish by drying your page with a heat tool.

watercolor flower painting

Outline the flower center and petals with a Sharpie pen, adding texture lines to each petal and small dots around the center to create dimension. Lightly sketch leaves in the background, then fill in the negative space with dark green watercolor to make the leaves stand out. Finish by drying your artwork with a heat tool.

Adding texture and shading to flower

Next, I’ll add dark purple watercolor paint around the flower center, using a fan brush to spread the paint out. Dry with a heat tool. At this point, I noticed that my flower center looked like a heart! I used a Sharpie to accentuate that heart shape more with dots.

Next, use the Sharpie to add texture lines to the leaves. Dip the fan brush in dark purple paint again and gently tap it over the page to create a subtle splatter effect on the flower. Dry with a heat tool.

To add depth, use an Aquarellable Pencil around the flower center, smudging the lines with your finger for a textured effect. Dip the fan brush in gold acrylic paint and tap it to create a delicate gold splatter on the flower center. Outline the edges with a Sharpie to frame the piece, then dry with a heat tool, remove the painter’s tape, and admire your finished artwork!
