Using just five simple supplies, I’m walking you through a fun and approachable process to paint this whimsical flower, complete with bold splashes of color and pops of texture. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist, this project is designed to help you explore your creativity and build confidence!
Prep your art journal page by taping off the edges with painter’s tape. Mist your watercolor palette with water to activate the colors.
To begin, I’ll create the flower center by painting a circle of clean water and dotting it with orange watercolor paint. From there, I’ll pull the paint outward to form the petals, gradually adding touches of red and pink to bring depth and vibrancy. For added contrast, I’ll dot a bit of purple watercolor in the flower center.Next, I’ll paint a flower stem and leaves using a light green watercolor, blending in some orange.
Let’s add a playful splatter effect! Using a fan brush, I’ll dip it into yellow watercolor paint, then tap it against another brush above the page to create a spray. I’ll repeat the process with purple and green watercolor paints, adding layers of texture to the background.
Use an ultra-fine Sharpie to outline the flower center and petals with loose, natural, scribbly lines, giving your piece a relaxed feel. Add texture to the petals with additional lines and dot details to the center for extra dimension. Extend the whimsical look by adding similar scribbly lines to the stem and leaves.
To enhance the piece further, I decided to add more splatter. Using the fan brush, I tapped purple watercolor paint onto the page, focusing around the flower center.
Next, use your Sharpie to create a border by tracing along the edge of the painter’s tape. Once the tape is removed, add extra lines to give the border a playful, scribbly touch. To finish, I’ll paint my signature red heart near the flower stem using red watercolor paint, and giving it a quick outline.
