This week’s art journal page is all about layering color, adding texture, and just enjoying the process. We’ll start with simple watercolor blooms and build from there – outlining, adding depth, and finishing with a few unexpected touches like bold Sharpie marks and splatter effects. It’s not about getting it perfect – it’s about showing up, playing with your supplies, and seeing where the page takes you.
Start by prepping your art journal page: tape off the edges with painter’s tape to create a clean border. Lightly mist your watercolor palette to activate the colors and get them ready for painting.
Now, let’s add some color! Begin by painting yellow and orange flower centers, mixing in a bit of black for added depth in a few of them. Then, bring your blooms to life with petals in pink, purple, and blue tones. Use a soft green wash to fill in the background and tie everything together. Once you’re happy with the layout, dry the page using a heat tool to set the paint.
Grab a fine-tip Sharpie to begin outlining your flower and adding delicate texture lines for detail. Then, switch to a brush-tip Sharpie to layer in bold lines, playful dots, and extra texture to bring your flowers to life.
Next, I’m reaching for the Terrain Watercolor set to add richer greens to the background – perfect for hinting at abstract leaves and adding depth. Once that layer is dry, I’ll bring back my brush-tipped Sharpie to sketch in a few loose vines for extra movement and texture.
For a final touch, I’ll dip a fan brush into dark blue and purple paint, then tap it against another brush to create a subtle splatter effect across the page. Give everything one last dry with a heat tool, peel off the painter’s tape, and take a step back to enjoy your finished piece!
