Pens, Pencils, and Paint Markers!

Here is another deep dive into supplies I know, use, and LOVE!   The one thing I love about art journaling is it can be done on the go.  You can pack a small bag and take those items with you on vacation, a car ride, the doctor’s waiting room, the carpool line, and more!

Let’s unpack my pen/pencil bag….

BLACK MARKERS/PENS:

My go-to markers are Sharpie’s.  They are permanent and inexpensive which is important to me. I buy them by the dozen and have them in all my bags..

They are so handy to have on the go.  I recommend having some pre-painted backgrounds so all you have to do is take your journal and pen along.  Those two items will fit in your purse.

Trust me when I say this makes being in a waiting room so much better.

The other black pens I recommend are Sakura Black Micron Pens because they are:

  •  Archival pigmented ink
  • Chemically stable, waterproof & fade resistant
  • No smears, feathers, or bleed-through

WHITE PENS:

When it comes to White Pens here are my top two picks (We will deep dive into liner work with paints/liner brush in a further blog post):

1. Uni- Ball White Signo Pen: – This is my favorite white pen currently.  I am always trying new ones but come back to this for the smooth, bright and clear lines. They are archival and fade resistant.  Remember they are water based though so I do not recommend a brush on varnish if you are using mixed media as they will brush away.
2.Sakura Gelli Roll White Gel Pen: My second favorite is the Sakura White Gelli Roll pen.  It has a great flow and is waterproof.  They also come in a variety of tip sizes: Gelly roll classic White is available in 05 (fine), 08 (medium) and 10 (bold)
I love to use on black or dark backgrounds.

PAINT PENS:

3. Posca Black/White Paint Pens: I really love the Posca white paint pens! They are super opaque and will work on pretty much any surface. I love using them when I am working over the top of acrylic paint on canvas.

PENCILS:

One more tool that I use is the Stabilo Aquarellable Pencil for shading and darkening.  They are fun to play with and as the name suggests they are activated by Water (Aqua).  Again, remember they are water based so I do not recommend a brush on varnish if you are using with mixed media as those details will brush away.
Don’t forget a General Pencil Sharpener as you will use it often!  This is the best one I have found:

Again, in a future post we will deep dive into black and white acrylic paint liner work as that remains my favorite!  Stay tuned as I will be unpacking my travel back to share what art supplies I bring along….
