Create some mixed-media flower art in your art journal with me! We’ll be working with acrylic paints to create a fun, abstract background. Then, I’ll be showing you from start to finish how to paint pretty daisy flowers on top. This is a great beginner art piece if you are just getting started with art journaling! Leave the perfection at the door and just enjoy creating with this tutorial.
Start off by taping off the edges of your art journal page with painter’s tape. Then, add a coat of white gesso to your page to prep and prime it.
I will gather my acrylic paints and use Laguna, Slate Grey, Summer Squash, Cool White, and Carbon Black for today’s project. If you don’t have these exact colors, use whatever you would like! I want my background to be splotchy and runny. I’m going to use a fan brush and add splatters as well as watery splotches. Then, I’m going to mist the background with water and tilt my journal to create drips running down the page. Let dry or dry with a heat tool.
Next, I’m going to take my white gesso and paint on my flowers. You may have to do two coats to make those petals pop. Then, I’ll add yellow paint to color my flower centers.
I’ll take a liner brush with some Carbon Black paint and just outline my flowers. You can use a pen or Sharpie, but I like to use paint for this. I’ll also add some stems with my black paint as well. Let dry or dry with a heat tool.
I’m going to take a Ranger Archival ink pad and a stencil brush and add some darker texture around the edge of my page.
Finally, I’m going to take a thick Posca Paint Pen in black and add some scribbles to my stems and some dots to my flower centers. Then, I’m going to remove my painter’s tape and give my art a darker border. I’m taking a ruler to create my line so that it’s nice and straight.
