Today’s mixed media art tutorial is against a backdrop of deep, dark hues with white flowers. Using acrylic paint and pens, we’ll create a bold and whimsical piece. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, join us on this creative journey as we discover the beauty of contrast in mixed media art.
Prep your art journal by taping off the edges with Painter’s Tape and applying a coat of white gesso. Dry with a heat tool.
Paint your background with dark colors – I am using black, Bluegrass Green, and Poetic Plum. I am adding strokes of color from side to side and blending the three colors together. Dry with a heat tool.
Next, grab a Sakura Gelly Roll White or Posca Paint Markers White to doodle on your flowers. I will also use a liner brush with white acrylic paint to paint my flowers too. There is nothing like acrylic on acrylic, so I prefer to do that! I will use a mixture of all three to get different textures and play with sketching on various flowers and leaves.
I’ll take a liner brush and use black acrylic paint to fill in all of the negative space in the background. Dry with a heat tool.
I like pops of color, so I’ll use Pyrolle Red to paint on some red hearts and Diarylide Yellow to fill in the center of a few of my flowers. Dry with a heat tool again, holding the heat on the hearts and flower centers to make them raise up a little bit.
Finally, spray your art piece with a sealer, remove the painter’s tape, and enjoy!
