With just a few simple supplies and some fun sketching techniques, you’ll create a beautiful page full of colorful flowers in your art journal. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a beginner, this tutorial will guide you through the process of blending watercolors and adding striking details to make your artwork pop.

Begin by prepping your journal page: tape off the edges with painter’s tape to create a clean border. Lightly mist your watercolor palette with water and allow the paints to soften for about 30 seconds. Since we’ll be using the ‘wet on wet’ technique today, mist your paper with water as well.

Start adding color by painting yellow centers for your flowers, then choose vibrant shades like pinks, oranges, and purples for the petals. Use a soft green to fill in the background, allowing the colors to flow and blend naturally. Let the water guide the paint across the page. Once you’re happy with the effect, dry your work using a heat tool.

Using a Molotow or Sharpie pen, begin outlining the flower centers and petals with loose, confident strokes. Add texture by drawing fine lines within the petals and centers to give them more depth. Next, sketch leaves and stems in the background. Use a thicker pen or Sharpie marker to add more bold lines.

Next, apply a darker green watercolor to the negative space in the background, making the leaves and stems stand out. Dry the paint with a heat tool.

To enhance depth and dimension, use an Aquarellable Pencil to outline areas, then gently smudge the lines with your finger for a soft, blended effect. Carefully remove the painter’s tape and enjoy!
