Prepare your art journal page by securing the edges with painter’s tape, then lightly mist both your watercolor palette and the page with water.

Begin painting by creating the shapes of flower centers using warm yellow or orange tones. For the petals, blend rich shades of red and purple, allowing the colors to flow organically. To add variety, incorporate hints of blue for additional floral shapes and layer green throughout the background. Dry with a heat tool.

Use a fine-tip Sharpie pen to sketch delicate flower petals and centers onto your page, then switch to a thicker Sharpie marker to create bold lines and add texture. To enhance the details, add small dots to the flower centers and sketch a few leaves within the green areas.

Next, deepen the background by layering darker green watercolor paint into the negative spaces, allowing the flowers to stand out. Dry with a heat tool.

adding detail lines and texture

Use a small stencil brush to add black ink from an ink pad to your flower centers for shading. Next, I’ll dip a fan brush in black watercolor paint and tap it against another brush above my page to create a splatter effect on my flower centers. Dry with a heat tool and remove the painter’s tape.
