Join me in this quick art journaling tutorial where, with just five simple supplies, we’ll transform a blank page into a beautiful floral scene! From layering watercolor, outlining with Sharpies, and adding splatter effects, I’ll guide you step-by-step through my favorite techniques – proof that a handful of supplies is all you need to create something beautiful.
Begin by prepping your art journal page: tape off the edges with painter’s tape to create a clean border. Lightly mist your watercolor palette with water and let the colors activate for about 30 seconds.
Now, let’s add some color! I’ll start by painting flower centers with yellow, followed by pink, orange, and red for the petals. To complete the look, I’ll use a soft green to fill in the background. Once you’re happy with your design, use a heat tool to dry the page.
Begin by using an Ultrafine Sharpie to outline the petals and centers of your flowers, adding leaves in the background as well. Enhance the texture by drawing fine lines on the leaves and petals. To make the leaves stand out, paint the negative space in the background with a darker shade of green. Once finished, dry your work with a heat tool.
Next, take a liner brush and black acrylic paint to add bold accents to the flowers and leaves. Use a thicker Sharpie to create dotted details around the flower centers for extra dimension.
Dip a fan brush into black watercolor paint and gently tap it over your page to create a splatter effect across your artwork. Use a heat tool to dry thoroughly. For a finishing touch, add a few of your signature red hearts in the background with Pyrolle Red acrylic paint. Dry once more, carefully peel off the painter’s tape, and enjoy your completed piece!
