Transform an art journal page into a vibrant masterpiece with this easy step-by-step tutorial! From bold, colorful backgrounds to textured yellow flowers and eye-catching details, this project is perfect for experimenting with layers and techniques.

Prep your art journal page by taping off the edges with painter’s tape and applying a coat of white gesso.

Next, I’ll add blocks of swiped color to my background – Quinacridone Violet, Primary Magenta, and Cobalt Turquoise Hue. Dry with a heat tool.

Next, use white gesso to paint three flower centers and their petals. For the petals, swipe the paint outward from the center to create a natural flow. Then, layer on vibrant shades of Diarylide Yellow, Primary Yellow, and Hansa Yellow Light to bring the flowers to life. Use a heat tool to dry the paint, holding it slightly closer to the flowers to create a bubbling effect for added texture and dimension.

Add detail lines using a paint pen, Sharpie marker, or black acrylic paint. I’ll outline each flower petal with a liner brush and Carbon Black paint for crisp definition. Then, use a small stencil brush to pounce black paint around the flower centers, creating depth. For a final touch of texture, add dotted accents around the flower centers using a black Posca pen.

Use a stencil brush to add black ink from an ink pad around the edges of the page. I’ll use my finger to rub ink on other areas on the art piece to enhance all of that texture that we created.

Add a coat of sealer to your art piece, remove the painter’s tape, and enjoy your art!
