In this art journal tutorial, we’ll explore the “wet-on-wet” watercolor technique to create a beautiful art piece, adding depth and texture with layered colors. We’ll enhance our artwork with hand-drawn elements, like leaves and hearts, using both pens and acrylics. This project is perfect for experimenting with watercolor paint and bringing your art journal to life!
Prep your art journal by taping off the edges with painter’s tape and misting your watercolor palette with water.
We are working “wet-on-wet” today, which means you will use your paintbrush to add water to your entire page before adding the wet paint. Use a blend of green and yellow watercolor paint to create a heart in the middle of the page. I’ll also drop in some blue and black paint. I’ll also add dark green and dark blue to the background. Dry with a heat tool.
Outline the heart using a Molotow or Sharpie permanent pen. Add leaves to the background with a white Posca pen, then enhance the definition by layering on white acrylic paint. To create depth and dimension, use an Aquarellable pencil to shade around the heart.
Next, I’ll add an even darker blue to the negative space in the background to make the leaves pop. Dry with a heat tool.
Then, I’ll add my signature red hearts with Pyrrole Red acyrlic paint. Finally, I’ll seal my piece and remove the painter’s tape.
