I’m sharing a beginner-friendly tutorial of a beautiful watercolor flower! I’ll show you how to blend vibrant colors for your background, then sketch a delicate flower on top. Stencils and ink add a touch of playful texture and detail, making your creation truly one-of-a-kind. Even if you’re new to watercolors, this project is perfect for learning watercolor art and getting started with art journaling.
Start by prepping your art journal page by taping off the edges with Painter’s Tape. Mist your watercolor palette and your page with water.
Then, add blobs of color with your paintbrush to create your background. I’m using lots of yellows, oranges, reds, and purples. Tilt your journal up to let the paint colors blend and drip down the page. You could also mist more water onto the page to help this process. Dry with a heat tool.
Grab a fan brush, dip it into your watercolor paint, and tap it above your page to create a splatter effect on your background. Mist it with water again and dry with a heat tool.
Next, I’ll use a Molotow Blackliner pen to start sketching out a large flower with a stem. I’ll continue to add texture and details with my pen. I’ll also water down some black acrylic paint, dip my fan brush into the mixture, and tap it above my flower center for some splatter effect. Dry with a heat tool.
Then, I’ll use my Dare 2b Artzy Circle Duos stencil to add more details to my background. I’ll lay my stencil down and use a stencil brush to add color from ink pads to the background – I’m using Ranger Archival (Villainous Potion & Picked Raspberry) ink pads.
Finally, I’ll take an Aquarelle pencil and a liner brush with black acrylic paint to add more texture and details to my flower. Dry with a heat tool and remove the painter’s tape.
