mixed media art journal tutorial

Start by adding a coat of White Gesso to your art journal page. I’m going to create my background using soft colors, like white, Primary Yellow, Yellow Green Light, and Peacock Teal. I will add the various colors and blend them with my paintbrush.

Use a round brush and white gesso to paint your flower, stem, and leaves. Dry with a heat tool.

Next, I’m going to use a palette knife to apply modeling paste using my Dare 2b Artzy Lacey Leaves stencil. Lay your stencil on different areas of your background and use your palette knife to spread the modeling paste on top. Dry with a heat tool.

Then, I will work on painting my flower. I am using Peacock Teal, Yellow Green Light, Primary Yellow, and Primary Magenta to paint the petals, stem, and leaves. Dry with a heat tool.

I’ll use a liner brush with Carbon Black paint to outline and add detail lines to my flower. I’ll also use the end of my paintbrush to add dots of Pyrolle Red down my flower stem. Dry again.

I’ll use a stencil brush and Ranger Archival (Mermaid Lagoon & Rustic Wilderness) ink pads to add color around the edges of my page and to my stenciled leaves. Finally, I’ll paint a coat of DecoArt DuraClear (Satin) to seal my art piece. Dry with a heat tool and remove the painter’s tape.
