Join me on an artistic adventure as we explore the creation of a radiant watercolor sun art journal page. In this tutorial, we’ll embrace the beauty of watercolors while incorporating some fun techniques using painter’s tape and rubbing alcohol. Get ready to unleash your creativity and infuse your journal pages with the warmth and energy of the sun!

sun watercolor art journal page

Prep your art project by taping off the edges of your journal with painter’s tape and misting down your watercolor palette with water.

I’m going to grab a mug and use that to trace a circle onto my art journal page a little offset from the center. Then, I’m going to use thinner painter’s tape and add pieces all around the circle to create the rays of the sun.

I’m going to use a larger watercolor paintbrush and add lots of blues, greens, and purples to these segments around the circle.

I will take a pipette, fill it with rubbing alcohol, and add drops to my watercolor segments, which will create a textured bubble effect for my art.

I’m going to cover my circle back up with the mug so that I can create a splatter effect around it. Use a fan brush dipped in watered-down white acrylic paint and tap the brush over your art journal page. Dry with a heat tool.

Remove the thin painter’s tape and erase any pencil marks you still have showing. I’m going to add water to my sun and rays, and then add yellow watercolor paint. Then, I’ll add in DecoArt Extreme Sheen – 24k Gold to my sun and rays. I’ll also add some orange and red watercolor paint. Dry with a heat tool and remove your painter’s tape from the edges. Then, use a thick Sharpie marker to create a dark border.
