Today’s project is a bold and vibrant mixed media Southwest Florals art piece that’s bursting with color, texture, and playful linework. Whether you’re looking to loosen up your style or just want a fun way to explore acrylics, this tutorial is perfect for all experience levels.

Prep your art journal page by taping off the edges with painter’s tape. Apply a coat of Matte Medium.

Next, we’re going to paint the background. I’m using a mix of Titan Buff, Medium Gray Value, and white. I’m using my paintbrush to add vertical strokes of color until I’m happy with it. Let dry.

Using a round brush, sketch the general shape of your flower petals with a light color (like a mix of Primary Magenta and white). Keep your brush strokes loose – this project is all about embracing imperfection!

Work petal by petal, layering rich pinks, magentas, yellows, and oranges. Use a mix of dry brushing and blending to give the petals movement and depth. I’ll also add in some leaves with Cobalt Turquoise Hue for some fun pops of color.

Next, I’ll use a liner brush with Prussian Blue Hue to outline my flowers and add detail lines. Dry with a heat tool.

Grab an ink pad like Ranger Archival Ink (Mermaid Lagoon) and use a stencil brush to add a soft vignette around the edge of your page.

Finish it off by adding some Pyrolle Red hearts in your art (my signature look!) and a coat of DecoArt Duraclear (Satin) to seal your piece. Remove the painter’s tape and enjoy!
