Bring your art journal to life with this vibrant mixed media rose project! Using bold strokes of color, shimmering gold accents, and expressive brushwork, you’ll create a stunning layered background and delicate hand-painted roses. This step-by-step tutorial is perfect for artists of all levels looking to explore new techniques and add depth, texture, and creativity to their pages.
Prepare your art journal page by securing the edges with painter’s tape, then apply a smooth coat of Matte Medium for a sturdy base.
Next, blend strokes of Almondine, Quin Magenta, Primary Magenta, Titanium White, and a touch of Extreme Sheen 24K Gold across the page from left to right, allowing the colors to make a vibrant, textured background.
Next, I’ll use a liner brush to paint roses on my page. Dip your paintbrush in Titanium White, Quin Magenta, and Primary Magenta, and swipe the color around in a circle to create a rose. I’ll repeat this process to create two more roses. Dry with a heat tool.
Next, I’ll use New Leaf and Sap (light and dark green) together on my brush to paint the stems and leaves onto my roses.
Use a liner brush to add subtle swipes of Carbon Black to your roses, enhancing depth and dimension. Then, outline the stems and leaves for added definition. Dry with a heat tool.
Next, lightly drag your paintbrush across a black ink pad and swipe it over the background for a touch of texture. Using a dry brush, blend Prussian Blue Hue along the bottom of the page to create depth. To finish, seal your artwork with a coat of DecoArt Acrylic Sealer (Satin), then carefully remove the painter’s tape to reveal your masterpiece!
