Capture the magic of a winter forest in your art journal with this step-by-step guide. Using rich colors, layered textures, and simple techniques, you’ll create a serene snowy forest scene that’s both fun and relaxing to make. This project is perfect for artists of any skill level!

Start by taping off the edges of your art journal page with painter’s tape to create a clean border. Apply a coat of white gesso to prepare the surface.

Next, use a paintbrush to apply strokes of Plum Suede, Cherry Merlot, and white paint vertically across the page. For some added texture, swipe the paint using an old hotel room key or a similar tool. Once you’re done, dry the page with a heat tool.

Use a fan brush and Bittersweet Chocolate paint to add tree trunks to the background with a gentle pouncing motion. Next, use white paint and Prussian Blue Hue to lightly dab tree branches onto each trunk for a frosty, textured effect. To finish, swipe white paint along the bottom of the page to create a snowy ground.

Build depth in your art piece by adding more trees to the foreground. I’m using mostly white paint to make them stand out, and applying Bittersweet Chocolate at the base of each tree for added dimension.

To enhance the snowy effect, use a stencil brush to pounce white paint along the bottom of the page. Then, mix white paint with water, dip a fan brush in, and tap it against another brush to create a splatter effect, mimicking falling snow. Dry with a heat tool.

Finish by using a chip brush to apply Prussian Blue Hue around the edges of the page for a framed effect. Seal your work with Duraclear (Gloss) to give it a polished finish. Remove the painter’s tape, and your artwork is ready to enjoy!
