I am showing you how to create this mixed-media flower using lots of different tools and techniques. We’ll be working with gesso, acrylic paint, stamps, and more to create this simple and fun art journal page.

Prep your art piece by taping off the edges with painter’s tape and applying a coat of DecoArt Gesso (White)

I’m starting by painting my background with Primary Magenta, Cobalt Turquoise Hue, and Dioxazine Purple. Don’t even let your gesso dry – just add and blend the colors in a vertical motion on your page. Dry with a heat tool.

I want some texture in my background, so I’m going to use drywall tape to create a dot effect. Lay your tape down and use a palette knife to apply some gesso on top. Dry again.

Then, take some white gesso to paint your flower and then add a coat of Titanium White. I’ll use a liner brush with some magenta and paint some lines near the bottom of my flower. Next, I’ll use Sap Green to paint a stem. Paint some leaves with white gesso and add Green Gold and Sap Green on top. Use a liner brush and some black acrylic paint to outline and add detail lines to everything.

I’m going to dry brush on some Prussian Blue Hue around the edges of my page. Dry with a heat tool.

Finally, I’ll take a black ink pad and a small stencil brush and add some shading to my flower petals. Apply a coat of DecoArt DuraClear Satin Varnish to seal your art piece, dry with a heat tool, and remove your painter’s tape.
