Looking for a bold and beautiful art journal project to spark your creativity? This stunning acrylic floral design featuring vibrant blues, shimmering gold details, and loose hand-painted outlines is just the thing. I was thinking about wallpaper, dancing petals, and grandma’s dinner plates for this one – all at once! Whether you’re new to acrylics or a seasoned mixed media artist, this process is simple and expressive!

Start by taping off the edges of your art journal page with painter’s tape if you want that crisp border look. Then apply a thin layer of white gesso to your page to prime the surface. Let it dry completely.
I reached for all the DecoArt Media blues I had on hand, including Cobalt Blue Hue, Primary Cyan, and Prussian Blue Hue. Add some Titanium White and Titan Buff to mix lighter tones. Keep your palette simple and mostly monochromatic for a cohesive look.
Use a round brush and begin loosely painting flower shapes across your page. Some petals are rounded, some are more abstract. Tip: Layer your blooms, alternating between light and dark shades for depth.
Once your flowers are down, switch to a smaller brush and add vines, swirls, and funky leaves. These elements help fill in the space and create movement across the page.

To add extra contrast, I painted small flower centers in lighter tints of blue, and later added pops of Decoart Extreme Sheen – 24K Gold and even some tiny Pyrrole Red hearts. That splash of color gave the whole piece energy and personality.
I couldn’t resist adding a few highlights, swirls, and details with my liner brush. These help the florals pop even more against the white background.
Once your painting is dry, apply a coat of satin varnish using a soft brush. This protects your piece and gives it a lovely finish.
