This colorful mixed-media art journal page is all about loose flowers, bright color, and playful layered details. You’ll start with a splattered Distress Oxide Spray background, then draw bold whimsical flowers with a Sharpie and fill them with bright watercolor. Finish the page with stencil details, white paint dots, Aquarellable pencil shading, and Dorland’s Wax to seal everything. It’s happy, colorful, and full of creative energy.

Begin by taping your art journal page around the edges with painter’s tape. This gives you a clean border when the project is finished and helps hold the page flat while you work with sprays, water, and paint.
Protect your work surface, then spray Distress Oxide Sprays from above so the color falls naturally onto the page. Start with Worn Lipstick, then add Peacock Feathers and a little Villainous Potion. Try to leave some white space as you spray, but don’t worry if the color spreads more than expected. Lightly mist water over the top and let the sprays move, soften, and blend.
Spritz or splatter water across the sprayed background to activate the Distress Oxides. If an area feels too strong or too defined, add a little more water and let it melt into the page. Dry the background with a heat tool before moving on.

Use a Sharpie and a ruler to draw a simple decorative border. Keep it loose and imperfect. Add scallops, dots, lines, or any playful border pattern that feels fun. This creates a graphic frame around the page and adds structure to the loose sprayed background.
Use the Sharpie to draw large, simple flower shapes over the background. Start with a circle for the center, then add rounded petals around it. Add stems and leaves, letting them overlap and extend naturally. Don’t overthink the shapes. These flowers are meant to feel whimsical and full of personality.

Fill the petals with bright watercolor, letting the colors blend inside each shape. Use blues, teals, pinks, yellows, greens, oranges, and purples to create rainbow-style flowers. Since the Distress Oxide background is water-reactive, some of the background may blend into the flowers, and that’s part of the fun.
Use black acrylic paint with a foam detailer to add bold flower centers. If white paint doesn’t show up well against the background, switch to black for stronger contrast. Add color to the leaves with greens and yellows, letting the watercolor stay bright and loose.

Use a stencil brush with archival ink, such as Mermaid Lagoon and Picked Raspberry, to add dot patterns and extra texture around the page. Layer the stencil lightly so it enhances the background without taking over. These little details make the page feel more finished and dimensional.
Use white acrylic paint with a foam detailer or small detail tool to add tiny dots along the flower centers, leaves, or border. Keep these marks small and playful. They add contrast and make the flowers pop.
Use an Aquarellable pencil around the border, flowers, and edges to add shadow and depth. Smudge it slightly with your finger or a damp brush to soften the lines. This helps everything feel more grounded and gives the artwork a finished mixed-media look.
Once the page is completely dry, apply Dorland’s Wax with a soft cloth or paper towel. Since this piece includes water-soluble sprays and watercolor, wax is a great way to seal without reactivating the layers. Make sure you are finished before waxing, because nothing should be added over the wax. Peel the painter’s tape away at a 45-degree angle to reveal a crisp white border. Sign your artwork and enjoy your finished page.

This rainbow flower art journal page is bright, playful, and packed with mixed media techniques. The sprayed background creates movement, the Sharpie flowers add structure, and the watercolor brings everything to life. It’s a fun reminder to embrace color, play with your supplies, and let the page become what it wants to be!
