Grab your art journal and let’s create a fun mixed-media art piece! We will be creating a colorful, abstract flower with a lot of whimsical doodles and leaves. Creating from the heart is relaxing, and I hope you will enjoy creating this art journal page along with me.
First, tape off the edges of your art journal page with painter’s tape. Then, apply a coat of DecoArt Chalky Gesso (White) to your page. This preps and primes your paper for creating.
Then, add some Cobalt Teal Hue, Yellow Green Light, and white paint to your background. Dry with a heat tool. Take a stencil brush and a teal stamp pad and add some color to the edges of your page.
Find something around that you can use to trace to create your flower center. I’m just using my gesso bottle, and tracing the circle slightly off center with a pencil.
We’re going bold and I’m painting my flower center with Pyrrole Red. Next, I’ll paint my flower petals with white gesso. I’m going to mix Yellow Oxide and Diarylide Yellow to paint the petals.
Take a liner brush and some black acrylic paint. Outline your flower center and then add a large swirl in the middle. Then, outline each of your petals too, and add a stem.
Next, we are going to paint our leaves! I am using Sap Green and painting a leaf coming off of my stem and then painting two vines with leaves all along it too. Then, I’ll outline each leaf with black paint. I’ll also add a little swirl doodle to my flower leaf.
Take some white acrylic paint and add a “comma” line to each flower petal. Then, mix your white paint with a little bit of water, dip a fan brush into your mixture, and tap it above your art journal page to create a splatter effect. I’ll also paint a few white dots on my flower center and flower leaf too. Dry with a heat tool.
Finally, I’ll use a stencil brush and a green ink pad and add some color to the bottom of my page. Remove your painter’s tape and enjoy!
