This colorful mixed media art journal page is all about going bold, trusting the process, and letting the flowers become exactly who they want to be. We begin with a full metallic gold background, build large floral shapes with gesso, and then layer in nearly every color of the rainbow. Black linework, white highlights, dots, and splatter bring the flowers to life while still allowing that shimmering gold background to shine through! This project is a wonderful reminder to create from the space you are in, follow the colors that make you happy, and trust that the layers will come together.
Begin by taping around the edges of your watercolor journal page with painter’s tape. Press the tape down firmly so the painted background does not seep underneath.
For an especially crisp border, brush a small amount of matte medium along the inside seams of the painter’s tape. This helps seal those edges and creates a cleaner line when the tape is removed later. Allow the matte medium to dry before continuing.
Apply a light coat of white gesso across the page. The gesso prepares the paper for the metallic acrylic background and gives the paint a more consistent surface. You do not need to add water to the gesso. Brush it directly onto the page and dry it completely before adding the gold.
Shake the 24K Gold Extreme Sheen paint thoroughly, then begin brushing it across the full page.
Use smooth, even strokes and work the paint across the surface until the paper is covered. Metallic paint can sometimes look streaky during the first coat, so let the paint dry and add another thin layer where needed.
Keep the heat tool moving while drying so the background remains as smooth as possible. Once dry, the page should have a rich metallic finish that almost resembles a sheet of gold metal.
Use white gesso and a round brush to sketch several oversized flowers directly onto the gold background.
Place one large flower toward the upper portion of the page, another bold bloom along the right side, and a third flower extending off the lower-left corner. Allow some of the petals to move beyond the taped painting area so the composition feels cropped, full, and energetic.
Use a heat tool to dry the flower shapes completely. Because some areas of gesso may be thicker than others, move the heat tool around the page and check that the surface is no longer cool or damp before adding color. The white gesso gives the bright acrylic colors a lighter base so they will appear more vibrant over the metallic gold.
Gather a selection of bright acrylic paints in teal, cyan, green, magenta, red, orange, and yellow. Begin painting the petals with loose strokes. Do not assign only one color to each flower. Instead, let several colors move through each bloom. Add teal, blue, and green through the upper flower, then bring reds, magentas, oranges, and hints of blue into the lower and side flowers.
Continue building color one petal at a time. Allow neighboring petals to vary, even within the same flower. Some petals may lean heavily toward teal and green, while others include streaks of bright blue or yellow. The red flowers can contain magenta, orange, teal, violet, and small flashes of yellow.
Dry between some of the layers so the colors stay bold instead of blending into mud. A quick pass with the heat tool allows you to continue layering without losing the individual colors.
Once the colorful layers are mostly dry, use Carbon Black acrylic paint and a liner brush to outline the flowers.
Add loose black lines around the outer edges of the petals and through the flower centers. Let the lines double back or overlap in places rather than trying to make a single perfect outline.
Bring the black paint inward from the centers and add narrow marks through the petals. These darker strokes create contrast and help the colorful flowers stand out against the gold background.
Use Titanium White acrylic paint with a liner brush to add bright highlights throughout the flowers. Paint narrow white streaks along selected petals, leaving some areas untouched. The white helps separate overlapping colors and gives the flowers more depth and energy.
Use a foam detailer or dotting tool to add white dots around portions of the black flower centers. Vary the size of the dots and leave small gaps so they feel playful rather than overly uniform.
Thin Carbon Black paint slightly and use a fan brush to splatter it across the page. Concentrate some of the splatter around the flower centers and open areas of the gold background, but allow a few marks to travel across the entire composition.
Repeat the splatter process with a few of the colors already used in the flowers. Teal, red, orange, and blue work especially well.
This page contains gesso, multiple layers of acrylic paint, thick flower centers, dots, and splatter, so it needs to dry thoroughly before sealing. Use a heat tool carefully, keeping it moving so the paint does not bubble or scorch. Thicker areas may require additional drying time. Allow the page to cool before applying the sealer.
Use a clean, soft-bristled brush to apply a thin coat of satin sealer over the finished artwork. Brush gently so you do not disturb any paint that may still be slightly soft. The satin finish protects the artwork while allowing the metallic gold background and layered color to retain a subtle glow. Let the sealed page sit flat until it is fully cured.
Carefully peel away the painter’s tape to reveal the clean white border.
The metallic gold background gives the entire page warmth and shimmer, while the layers of teal, blue, red, orange, magenta, yellow, black, and white create flowers that feel full of life. The final splatter makes them look as though they are surrounded by confetti! Keep painting, keep adding color, and let your flowers dance to the beat of their own drum.
