I’d love to guide you through painting these pretty heart balloons in your art journal! I’m sharing step-by-step instructions to help you create a lovely and whimsical art journal page using acrylic paint, dry wall tape, and more. February is the month of love, so this is the perfect time to paint some hearts!
Prep your page by taping off your edges with painter’s tape. I’m also going to apply a coat of DecoArt white gesso.
I’m going to use Cobalt Blue, Green Gold, and Cobalt Teal Hue to paint my background, blending the colors in an up-and-down motion. I’m going to use a stencil brush to pounce on some white paint and Dioxazine Purple. I want to create a galaxy effect with some paint splatter, so I’ll dip a fan brush in white paint and tap it above my page. Dry with a heat tool.
I’m going to paint three hearts with my white gesso. Next, I’ll use drywall tape as a stencil and add some texture with white gesso to my two larger hearts. Dry with a heat tool.
I’ll paint my hearts with Pyrrole Red, Primary Magenta, and Quin Magenta. Dry with a heat tool. I’ll use a liner brush and black acrylic paint to outline my hearts and add balloon ties and strings. Dry with a heat tool.
I’ll take a stencil brush and Ranger Archival Ink (Black) and add some color around the edges of my page. I’ll also use my finger to add some ink to my hearts to bring out that texture and dimension.
I’ll use a liner brush to add some detail lines with white paint. I’m going to finish my piece by spraying a coat of matte sealer. Dry with a heat tool. Then, I’ll use DecoArt DuraClear (Gloss and High Gloss) on two of my hearts and DecoArt Triple Thick on one of my hearts so those are the only shiny pieces on my art journal page.
Dry with a heat tool and remove your painter’s tape.
