I’m sharing how to create this stunning mixed media posies art piece for your art journal! This one has flower elements that literally pop off of the page. I’m showing you how to paint this from start to finish, add mixed media elements, and finish it with a sealer. This one is great for both beginners and experts!

Add a coat of DecoArt Chalky Gesso (White) to prepare your art journal page. Next, we’ll work on the background to create a sky and grass landscape. I am using DecoArt Media Green Gold along with a dark green for the bottom of my page. I’ll use Cobalt Teal Hue and Titanium White for the sky. Take a baby wipe and dab it around to blend your paint and add texture.

Take scrap paper and cut out flower shapes. These do not have to be perfect! I am cutting out three different sizes so I can stack them. I am going to cut out enough shapes to make three flowers for my art journal page.

I am going to paint my cut-out shapes with Pyrrole Red, Cadmium Orange Hue, and Hansa Yellow Medium, blending the colors on each flower shape. Then, crumple them up and flatten them back out. This creates some texture and fun for your flower petals! Place them where you would like them on your page.

adding mixed media flowers to page

Take black acrylic paint and a liner brush and add your flower stems and leaves. Dry with a heat tool.

I’m going to take a Ranger Archival ink pad in black and rub it along the edges of all of my posies. I’ll also take a Ranger Archival ink pad in Mermaid Lagoon and add some ink around the page edges of my sky with a stencil brush. I’ll do the same around the page edges of the grass with an ink pad in Rustic Wilderness. I’ll also add some clouds with my white acrylic paint and my stencil brush.

Glue down your flowers with Zip Dry. I found some buttons in my stash that I’ll glue to each flower to create a flower center. I’ll use an old gift card and go into the green and black to add blades to my grass. Dry with a heat tool.

Add painter’s tape to your buttons so that you don’t get sealer on them. Spray a coat of DecoArt Sealer: DecoArt Acrylic Spray Sealer (Gloss). Remove the painter’s tape and you’re done!
