We are working with acrylic paint today to create a beautiful poinsettia flower that is perfect for the holiday season. This is a simple, fun art journal page that is great for beginners who are looking to dive into using more acrylics in their artwork. I’m going to show you how to prep, paint, and finish your project!

poinsettia flower art journal page

Start by taping off your art journal page with painter’s tape. Then, add a coat of DecoArt Chalky Gesso to your page. Next, I’ll start dabbing color onto my background – I’m using Phthalo Turquoise, Cobalt Turquoise Hue, Yellow Green Light, and white. I’ll also add a hint of Quin Magenta. Dry with a heat tool.

Use your white gesso to paint on the poinsettia flower and leaves. Next, I’ll use Pyrrole Red, Primary Magenta, Quin Magenta, and white to paint my flower petals and get the color that I would like. I’ll use a stencil brush and Diarylide Yellow to add color to my flower center. I’ll use Yellow Green Light to paint my leaves. I’ll also add in some Carbon Black for texture. Dry with a heat tool.

Take a liner brush and black acrylic paint to outline your flowers and leaves, and add lots of detail lines. I’ll also take a stencil brush and Extreme Sheen (24k Gold) paint to add some gold to my flower center. Dry with a heat tool.

I’ll take an ink pad and a stencil brush and add some color around the edge of my page. Finally, I’ll mix some black paint with water, dip a fan brush in the mixture, and tap it above my page to create a splatter effect. I’ll do the same thing with the gold paint too.

Finally, I’ll apply a coat of Decoart DuraClear (Satin) to seal and finish my piece. Remove the painter’s tape and enjoy!
