Did you know that when you order an art journal, there is an option to have the first page painted by me? On this week’s live, I painted a purple pansy in Anita’s art journal that she recently ordered – and I love the way it turned out! This is a mixed-media art journal page made using acrylic paints, stencils, and ink.

Prep your page by taping off the edges with painter’s tape and applying a coat of Gesso: DecoArt White. For my background, I am going to use Medium Grey, Titanium White, and Cobalt Turquoise Hue. I’m going to add these colors going up and down and side to side. Dry with a heat tool.

I’ll use these same colors and a circular stencil to add some “bubbles” to my background for something fun and different.

Next, I’ll use white gesso to paint my flower center and flower petals. I’ll add Quin Magenta and Dioxazine Purple to the petals and Diarylide Yellow and DecoArt Extreme Sheen 24K Gold to the flower center. I’m going to use a stencil brush and apply this really thick. Dry with a heat tool.

I’ll take a liner brush and black acrylic paint to outline my flower petals and add texture lines. I’ll also paint on a stem and leaf. I’ll paint the leaf with white and green. Dry with a heat tool.

I’m going to add a splatter effect to just my flower center. I’ll cover the rest of my page up with towels. Mix gold paint with water, dip a fan brush in your mixture, and tap it above your page to create splatters. Dry again.

Finally, take a stencil brush and a Ranger Black Archival pad and add some color around the edges of your page. Seal it with Decoart Duraclear (Satin) and remove your painter’s tape.
