I will do something I don’t normally do and start by sketching some tropical flowers and THEN adding my watercolor paint. This simple and colorful tropical flower art journal page is both easy and fun! I’m going to share with you how to create this from start to finish.

Prep your page by taping off the edges with painter’s tape. Take a black permanent pen (Sharpie or Molotow)  and sketch out your flowers.

I’m going to work wet-on-wet for the flower petals. Use a paintbrush to add water to each of your flower petals, then add your watercolor paint and let the water blend it. I am using pink for my large flower along with some purple. I’ll use a dark orange for my bottom flower and keep my top flower petals white. I’ll also paint the flower centers with yellow from the Prima Shimmering Lights palette. For the background, I’m using green watercolor paint and some dark blue. Dry with a heat tool.

Next, take a black permanent pen and start adding detailed lines. Outline your flower petals and centers and add texture lines to each petal. Take a small stencil brush and some black acrylic paint and add some texture around your large flower center.

Sketch some leaves with your black pen and fill in with some darker green watercolor paint. Add some detail lines to your leaves. I’ll also sketch a few small vines with leaves. I’ll add a borderline around my entire page.

Finally, mix water with black acrylic paint and use a fan brush to add a splatter effect to the flower center. Dip your fan brush in the mixture and tap it above your page. Dry with a heat tool. Spray your piece with Decoart Acrylic Spray (Gloss) and remove the painter’s tape.
