Looking for a fun, freeing way to explore color and linework? This whimsical floral art journal page is bursting with playful energy, and it only uses five simple supplies! With bold watercolor washes and expressive black ink florals, this project is perfect for anyone who wants to create without overthinking.

Prep your art journal page by taping the edges with painter’s tape if you’d like a clean border. Before diving in, give your watercolor palette a generous 30-second soak to activate the pigments. You want them nice and juicy for a bold color payoff.

Using a flat brush, swipe bold colors horizontally and vertically across your page. Let the hues blend naturally and embrace the “messy” look! I used pinks, oranges, yellows, and purples from my Odyssey set, skipping around between colors and letting them run together. Dry with a heat tool.

Once dry, grab your black permanent marker and start drawing loose, whimsical flowers. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, just let your pen flow! Try hearts, swirls, exaggerated petals, and funky stems. Some will be tall, some short, some bold, some delicate. This part is all about joy and spontaneity.

Use your marker to add playful dots, doodles, and extra lines for interest. Vary your line thickness and patterns to create movement and visual energy. Resist the urge to overwork it, a little white space can be your best friend.

5 supplies for art journaling

This project is a reminder that you don’t need tons of time or supplies to create something beautiful and expressive. Watercolor and a black pen go a long way when paired with imagination and freedom.

You can protect your finished piece with Dorland’s Wax Medium or another spray-free sealer if desired (especially since Sharpie can react with some sprays).
